The Challenge

Onuma Co, a digital product collective that I founded and operate, partnered with Curia to bring the curated streaming platform to life. Created for people who actually want to watch movies and stop doom-scrolling, the cross-platform service featured highly curated collections and custom content, with an emphasis on cinematic education. Curia was dedicated to presenting users with context around cinema that added value to their viewing experience.

A flexible, digital collective

Onuma Co functions as a flexible digital collective. Contingent upon the client need, I assemble a team of my most trusted collaborators across disciplines. This dynamic function allows us to easily flex, making us experts at embedding ourselves in client teams and processes.

Approach

In the case of Curia, we brought our expertise to a team of newcomers to the space. From translating their emerging brand to the digital space, to helping them interpret the requirements of their backend system, my team of creatives and developers functioned as true partners in bringing the platform to life.

Beyond functioning as the creative lead, designing the architectural structure and executing wireframes and documentation, my role extended to sole project lead, client liaison, product manager and resourcing. I translated client requests into requirements, managed timelines and budgets, ran pre-lauch QA with the client, and did just about everything else that needed to be done!

A mobile-first, cross-platform experience

In collaboration with Curia’s OTT provider, we took a mobile-first approach to design and development. Achieving rigorous parity between iOS, Android, and mobile web experiences, we then scaled up to full-screen viewports, ensuring preservation of the integrity of the brand experience across every touchpoint.

Accommodating iterative launch states

In anticipation of launch, Curia wanted to stoke excitement by changing the state of the pre-launch site. Though this wasn’t in the initial scope, our modular approach allowed us to provide these additional states with minimal effort.

A dynamic, scalable system

In order to ensure success across both the breadth of platform demands, and the need for future-proof scalability across an ever-expanding library of content, we assumed a highly componentized, modular approach to design. We established a dynamic system employing clean, simple shapes and color schemes allowing content to have character, but never be imposed upon.
